Located between 6 and 10 degrees south of the equator and surrounded by 1’300’000 square kilometres of sparkling ocean, these secluded islands have a total population of just 81’000. The islands of Seychelles are without doubt one of the world’s best-kept secrets and among the safest and cleanest destinations on the planet.
The 43 inner islands, grouped around the principle islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, are the world’s only granitic oceanic islands. They are the mountain peaks of the pre-historic supercontinent Pangaea, which once covered early earth’s surface and is reputed to have broken out from its centre some 750 million years ago.
North Island, and its neighbouring island Silhouette, contain the only evidence of volcanic ash above sea level in Seychelles. Both of these islands, although granitic, are almost certainly much younger than Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. It is believed they were formed approx. 90 million years ago when Seychelles separated from India.
Seychelles enjoys a warm, year-round tropical climate due to its location just 6 degrees below the equator. The islands lie outside the cyclone belt ensuring a consistently pleasant climate with temperatures rarely rising above 32°C or below 27°C. The winds, well noted by early Arabian merchants along the East-African coast, are also characteristic features of the weather; cool, dry winds blow from May to September and moist Northwest winds from December to March. December and January are usually the wettest months of the year and average around 300 mm of rainfall per month.
